Bike Computer Classroom | A Complete Guide to Turn-by-Turn Navigation

When participating in long-distance cycling challenges or exploring unknown routes, the biggest worry is missing a turn due to dim light or physical fatigue. Taking a wrong turn and adding extra kilometers can disrupt your pedaling rhythm, ruin your hydration plan, or even cause you to miss the event cut-off time.

These common navigation mishaps can be easily avoided by correctly setting up and understanding the "Turn-by-Turn" feature on your Bryton bike computer. This article provides an in-depth look at how turn-by-turn data works and shows you how to ensure every imported route has precise turn cues.

What Is the "Turn-by-Turn" Feature?

In cycling navigation, standard route files (such as GPX or FIT) usually contain only a basic GPS track line (breadcrumb trail). However, when a file includes additional turn-by-turn data, your Bryton bike computer will automatically pop up an intersection thumbnail along with the remaining distance as you approach a turn. It will also provide clear directions on the screen (e.g., Turn Left, Turn Right, Keep Right).

This proactive alert system ensures that you can make precise steering decisions even when focusing on bike handling, riding at night, or descending at high speeds, without needing to stare constantly at the map trail.

Understanding Route Sources: Why Do Some Routes Lack Turn Cues?

A common question among riders is: "Why doesn't the route I synced from a third-party platform show turn cues during navigation?" This depends entirely on how the route was generated:

  • Routes planned directly within the Bryton Active App: The system automatically embeds turn-by-turn data when generating the route, giving you precise navigation and intersection alerts out of the box once downloaded to your device.

  • Routes synced from STRAVA or other third-party platforms: These platforms typically provide only the raw GPS track lines, which do not inherently include turn-by-turn prompt data.

The Technical Solution: Generate Turn Data with One Tap

If your route is synced from STRAVA or is an official race track file you downloaded manually, you can use the following steps to let Bryton automatically add the turn cues for you:

  1. Open the Bryton Active App.

  2. Go to CourseMy Routes.

  3. Select your route and tap the Settings icon.

  4. Toggle on the "Get Turn-by-Turn Info" option.

Once enabled, the app will use its cloud algorithm to generate and append the turn data to the route. Check the bottom right corner of the route thumbnail; if a "Turn" icon appears, your route now successfully supports Turn-by-Turn alerts.

How Different Models Handle Turn-by-Turn Data

Bryton bike computers handle turn-by-turn information differently based on their hardware specifications and built-in chips:

Standard Display Models: Rider 650 / 550 / 460 Series

  • Mechanism: These models operate on a "file-dependent" prompt mode. The bike computer will display turn prompts and intersection thumbnails during a ride only if the route file itself already contains turn-by-turn data. When using these models, always make sure the "Get Turn-by-Turn Info" feature is enabled for the route in the app before setting off.

Smart Navigation Models: Rider S810 / S510 / 750 SE Series

  • Mechanism: Flagship S-series and designated high-end models feature powerful on-device navigation algorithms and offline maps. Even if your imported raw route does not contain any turn data, the device can use its built-in processing power to calculate and generate intersection turn alerts in real time as the map loads, providing a seamless, smart navigation experience.

Conquering Challenges with Precise Guidance

Every extreme challenge tests not only the endurance of your legs but also your pacing and judgment at every turn. Take three minutes before your departure to check and sync your turn-by-turn data via the Bryton Active App. Let your bike computer be your precise guiding light through the dark, fatigue, and unfamiliar road conditions.
